About this Role: We are in search of a highly dedicated and experienced Safety Specialist who will play a vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our construction site personnel. This specialist will be responsible for implementing and overseeing safety protocols, conducting inspections, and providing guidance to maintain a secure work environment.
Characteristics Duties and Responsibilities: The Safety Specialist will assume the crucial responsibility of enforcing safety measures and guidelines on our construction sites, with a primary focus on ensuring the well-being of our workforce. They will work diligently, both independently and collaboratively, following established safety procedures and guidelines. Daily site inspections and the enforcement of safety standards are of utmost importance. This role also demands a keen awareness of physical safety requirements, as it involves working in a dynamic construction environment with a variety of physical challenges. The Safety Specialist will be required to work under various weather conditions to ensure that safety remains a top priority.
Essential Functions:
- Conduct daily environmental and safety audits.
- Inspect and examine all health and safety-related complaints, workplace accidents, outbreaks of diseases, the spill of hazardous toxins or poison.
- Search for physical, biological, and chemical workplace hazards.
- Investigate the construction site to ascertain equipment, production, and material processes do not pose a safety or health hazard to employees, work guests, and the general public.
- Work closely with the site superintendent to identify potential hazards before work begins daily.
- Follow industry, company, site-specific and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety policies and standards.
- Conduct a 10-minute site walk once every hour during the workday.
- Write daily reports and send safety journals to Safety Manager on an hourly basis.
- Document the site condition and safety through pictures to be submitted with hourly journal.
- Submit safety observations as needed (positive and negative)
- Attend and review daily JHA meetings.
- Observe and monitor all subcontractors’ safety on-site.
- Report all items to the Safety Manager and follow-up as Safety Manager directs.
Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge:
- Ability to communicate excellently in both oral and written format.
- Profound knowledge of industry standards and regulations (OSHA)
- Good organizational and record-keeping abilities – the ability to maintain good records of all safety-related activities.
- Critical Thinking — Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
Minimum Requirements:
- Education: High school diploma or GED (preferred).
- Experience: Minimum of two years’ experience in construction safety
- Certifications/Licenses:
Must possess at least one of the following Certifications:
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
- Construction Health and Safety Technologist (CHST)
- Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST)
- Graduate or Chartered Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH)
- Safety Trained Supervisor – Construction (STS-C)
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in EHS discipline or EHS related field
Must successfully have completed at least one of the following in the past 3 years:
- NEBOSH Certificate/Diploma (EU and Asia)
- OSHA 30-hour Construction Industry Outreach Training course (US)
Physical Demands: The job requires the ability to sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment: The work environment involves an equal balance of indoor and outdoor settings. There may be potential exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures for periods exceeding one hour. Workers may experience distracting or uncomfortable noise levels and vibrations affecting the body or extremities. There is a risk of bodily injury from mechanical parts and electricity. Additionally, there's a possibility of exposure to fumes, odors, or other substances that may impact respiration and skin.
